At 10:00 a.m. on Monday, the National Museum of the Pacific War holds the annual Memorial Day Observance in Memorial Courtyard at the Museum. This year’s keynote speaker is Capt. Rex L. Curtin USN, Chief Naval Air Training in Corpus Christi. The color guard from the National Security Agency, Central Service Section in Lackland Air Force will post the colors and the Nimitz Living History Detachment will execute the three-gun volley followed by taps and music provided by Fredericksburg Community Band.

While older generations are very familiar with the Pacific War Story, most of the younger generations are unaware of the significance of the war – except in Fredericksburg, Texas, the birthplace of the commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Chester Nimitz.  The war started as Japan sought to expand her territory and modernize her nation.

Japan was overrunning Manchuria, Indochina, and China and capturing resources of these nations.  Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, trying to defeat the United States Pacific during that time.  The US declared war on Japan.

Presentations at the Museum offer great insight into the Pacific theater of World War II. Famous battles such as Midway, Iwo Jima, Coral Sea, Leyte Gulf, and Guadalcanal are explained through exhibitions.  The war ended with the Treaty signed on Battleship Missouri on September 2, 1945.

Come a day early to catch the reenactments and the 15-foot model of the carrier, Nimitz (CV-68) at the Nimitz Museum.   Located in the historic Nimitz Hotel on Main Street in downtown Fredericksburg, the Nimitz Museum showcases the Nimitz Family, Chester Nimitz’s childhood and appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, and his role during World War II and beyond.
