San Antonio TX Real Estate in 11th Best Performing USA City

San Antonio TX real estate values continue to hinge on the strong performance of her economy.  In 2009, Milken Institute rated San Antonio the 11th Best Performing in the U.S.A.  Of the 124 cities, 10 Texas cities, led by Austin, made it into the top 25.  Regional employers in oil and gas, technology and alternative energy affected this year’s rankings.

San Antonio came in eighth in the nation in terms of job growth from 2007 to 2008.  Employees from several sectors continue to pluck up San Antonio TX homes for sale.  There is growth in military, education, and health sectors, compensating for the loss of AT&T headquarters to Dallas.  From March 2008 to March 2009, non-farm jobs fell by only 0.2 percent.  The low cost structure and growing reputation of San Antonio TX real estate as a transportation and distribution hub is luring some big names.

Over the long term, the economy anchors four primary focuses:  financial services, government, health care, and tourism.  The defense industry employs almost 90,000 people in one of the largest military concentrations in the nation.

The city is home to two Fortune Global 500 companies, Valero Energy Corp and Tesoro Petroleum Corporation, and five Fortune 500 companies, which are Valero Energy Corp., Tesoro, Clear Channel Communications, USAA, and NuStar Energy.  Also headquartered here is H-E-B, the 11th largest private company in the nation.  Whataburger, Taco Cabana, Bill Miller Bar-B-Q, Harte-Hanks, Rackspace, Kinetic Concepts, Builders Square, Nationwide Mutual Insurance, Toyota, Medtronic, West Corporation, Citigroup, Boeing, QVC, Lockheed Martin, and Caterpillar continue the list of strong companies in the area.

The region’s medical cluster, aided by the expansion of Brooke Army Medical Center, created much opportunity.  Ambulatory health care services added 3,500 jobs between 2007 and 2008.  Northwest of the city center, the South Texas Medical Center conglomerate along with colleges and universities serve as strong stabilizing factors.

Tourism employs over 94,000 people, according to the San Antonio Tourism Council.  Every year, twenty million tourists come to see the city and visit the attractions in the area.  The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center hosts over 300 events with ¾ million attendees.
