Fredericksburg TX homes allow for wonderful fishing outings in Texas Hill Country.  Residents, guests, and visitors have marvelous opportunities to enjoy small private fishing holes, rivers such as the Pedernales, Guadalupe, and Llano, and lakes such as the seven Highland Lakes, Canyon Lake, Medina Lake and so many more.  Pleasant family overnights at The Back Forty, a Bed & Breakfast Ranch in Fredericksburg, offer the ultimate introduction to fly fishing and scenic lands near Fredericksburg Texas real estate.

A "fishing" trip to Kid's Day Out - A Free Day of Family Fun may be a great way to introduce young children to fishing.  About an hour northeast of homes in Fredericksburg, the event will be held at the rodeo grounds in Burnet TX real estate.  Plan on September 11, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Before then, the Fish with a Ranger program at Inks Lake State Park offers two introductory fishing classes, derbies, and kid's corner.  On August 4 and August 28, the morning sessions begin with safety, basic fishing skills instruction, a change for children to fish with a Park Ranger and Master Naturalist.  A limited supply of poles and bait will be available.  The park is an hour and 15 minutes northeast.

Sometimes children listen best to someone who loves what they are learning.  They will learn how to measure fish by pinching the tail together and measuring from nose to tail, how to tie the line to the hook with a Palomar knot, and how to catch and release fish.

If families already know some of the basic skills of fishing, your family may want to do an overnight camping trip at a state park in the area such as Blanco, Black Rock, or Colorado Bend.

Blanco State Park is a 110-acre park located just south of Blanco on US 281.  In addition to fishing and camping, facilities include children's play area, swimming, pedal boating, restrooms and showers.  For overnight reservations, call 512/389-8900.

Black Rock Park has a public boat ramp, some primitive camping, restrooms, and RV sites, playground, swimming, and fishing.  It is 13 miles west of Burnet on Highway 29 and right on Highway 261.

Colorado Bend State Park offers a spectrum of outdoor recreational opportunities.  Families can fish, boat, hike, mountain bike, go on guided nature and caving tours, watch birds, and study minerals at the travertine growths.  Only primitive camping facilities, and RVs and trailers must be self-contained.  This park is located on RR 580 between San Saba and Lampasas.

Below are basic safety practices to remember:
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Bring water and stay hydrated.
  • Use insect repellent while gingerly keeping it off hands that will touch fish.
  • Look behind before each cast to be sure no people or obstacles are in the way.
  • Use personal floatation devices for all young children and non-swimmers.  They are required for all persons in any boat.
