By investing in Texas Hill Country lands, boating property owners buy into many beautiful lakes and unlimited family relaxation.  The crystal-clear lake waters are not too far from any of the 55 cities that dot the magnificent rolling hills of In the 14,000 square-mile scenic Hill Country region.  Historic Fredericksburg real estate is at the heart.

West of Austin homes, the Texas Highlands Lakes is a chain of seven reservoirs formed by the Colorado River.  It extends west to east across the northern reaches of Texas Hill Country real estate to Austin.  In addition, north of San Antonio real estate, Canyon Lake and Medina Lake offer exciting boating options.

Most lakes near our central Texas homes feature boat slips where residents and homeowners dock their boats month after month.  Other lakes are more suitable for canoeing or kayaking.  Boat rentals and jet-skis are available at many lakes, too.  A good number of parks also allow boating.  They include Inks Lake State Park, Burnet County Park, Black Rock Park, Cedar Point Resource Area, San Marcos City Park, and Robinson City Park.  Over 30,000 boats are registered in Travis County alone.

Highland Lakes formed by the construction of several dams on the Colorado River as it winds southeast from its headwaters near the border of Texas and New Mexico to Matagorda Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The dams provide flood control and are used to generate hydroelectric power.  From West to East, upstream to downstream, the lakes and the associated dams include:
  1. Lake Buchanan, Buchanan Dam.  Located 60 miles northwest of Austin, Lake Buchanan is a large lake stocked with striped bass.

Lake LBY, Wirtz Dam.  Lake LBJ starts near Horseshoe Bay, about 45 miles from Austin, and continues for 21 miles.  It is over 10,000 feet at the widest point.  Features boathouses, automatic boatlifts, and LBJ Yacht Club and Marina, and is not overcrowded.  Constant level lake with is ideal for boating, waterskiing, and jet skiing.

  5. Lake Travis, Mansfield Dam.  Extending over 60 miles, Lake Travis is the longest of the Highland Lakes and is ideal for all types of boating.
  6. Lake Austin, Tom Miller Dam.  Surrounded by lovely homes, Lake Austin is home to riverboats, excursion boats, and numerous private marinas.
  7. Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake), Longhorn Dam.  This placid lake supports canoes only.  It is six miles long and has an average depth of 14 feet.
Canyon Lake is located on the Guadalupe River in Comal County halfway between Austin and San Antonio.  Offering 80 miles of beauteous shoreline, Canyon Lake is one of the deepest lakes in the state.  The average depth is 43 feet.  Canyon Lake Dam rises 224 feet above the riverbed.  On the north shore are Canyon Lake Marina and Cranes Mill Marina is on the south shore.  Two yacht clubs are on the lake, also.
