In the heart of Texas Hill Country, beautiful vineyards enrich the landscape in and near historic Fredericksburg real estate. Dedicated growers and vintners include longtime residents of homes in Hill Country as well as our charming Fredericksburg farms.
It all began in the mid 1600s when Franciscan priests produced sacramental wines from the native grapes. Currently, vineyards are spread throughout Texas Hill Country real estate, an area north of San Antonio and west of Austin homes.
German immigrants arrived in the latter part of the 1800s, introducing mustang grapes that produced popular varieties of wine. Nonetheless, Prohibition closed down winemaking until a revival in the late 1970s boosted the industry into subsequent national and international acclaim. The sunny climes and alkaline soil in Hill Country produce the rich fruitiness of California wines and the acidity and structure of French varieties.
Today's connoisseurs and judges are well aware of Texas wines. In fact, each year the 200 commercial vineyards and 50 wineries in all 6 viticulture areas within the State of Texas produce more than 1.5 million gallons of wine.
During a tour along Texas Hill Country Wine Trail, tourists sip several types of wine.
