Our primary and vacation homes in Texas Hill Country communities such as Fredericksburg, Johnson City, and Kerrville TX real estate enjoy a fabulous setting.  The Texas sky is the limit for residents of Fredericksburg TX homes when it comes to day trips and family adventures.

Fredericksburg TX real estate lends itself to spontaneous picnics and scenic drives.  Begin with destinations close to Fredericksburg or Kerrville TX homes.  Explore Luckenbach, the Pedernales River Valley or the Bat Caves at Old Tunnel.

For day trips or weekenders, we readily pop the children into the car and head in most any direction past diverse landscape of limestone hills and clear rivers and streams.  A scenic drive can be more than picturesque.  Do you want to see bats, wildflowers, or gemstones?  Are your children up for hiking, rock collecting, fishing, or floating down a Texas river?  Children may be fascinated, entertained, educated, and invigorated by many options.

Go south along the 23-mile paved back roads, the route of the former Fredericksburg and Northern Railway from Comfort to Luckenbach.  This scenic drive passes through the watersheds of the Guadalupe and Pedernales rivers and to the Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area.  To check out the bats, head east from Fredericksburg on Highway 290 for a half mile, turn south on Old San Antonio Road and continue 10.5 miles.  The Old Tunnel WMA is on the left at the top of the hill.

Three million Brazilian free-tailed bats live there in an abandoned railroad tunnel.  From Thursday through Sunday, there are nightly educational programs explain the bat lifestyle after they emerge from the tunnel in the nighttime, April to October.  Visitors also hike and view for birds and wildlife.

Go north for a scenic drive near home, a 42-mile paved highway through Central Texas mineral region to Enchanted Rock.  The Llano region features a vast array of minerals including gold, silver, iron, molybdenum, asbestos, fluorite, marble, serpentine, topaz, and granite.  The granite is world-renowned and evident in famous buildings such as the Texas State Capitol Building.  See Laurence Parent's book by Falcon Publishing for more information.

Go west from Kerrville to Hunt along the upper Guadalupe River to the Los Maples State Natural Area to see the changing autumn leaves.  Stop at Kerrville-Schreiner State Park, the Cowboy Artists of America Museum, Stonehenge II and/or hike through Lost Maples State Natural Area.
