Situated between Fredericksburg TX homes and Johnson City on 718 acres of prime Texas Hill Country real estate, the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historical Site is an interesting stop for tourists from around the world as well as local families from Gillespie County.  It honors a local Texas native.  U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) was born a few miles east of our Fredericksburg real estate offices.

LBJ's National Museum provides the most complete picture of the life of an America president anywhere in existence.  The historical record extends from his ancestors to his resting place.  Facilities include the 269-acre LBJ State Historical Park, which opened in 1970.  "All the world is welcome here," President Johnson then said.

At the Visitors Center inside the park, visitors view memorabilia and participate in interpretive exhibits.  Behrens Cabin is at the Visitors Center and the Danz family cabin from the 1860s is east of it.  An auditorium and outdoor amphitheater host events.  Activities available on the grounds include studies of history and nature, programs, state performances, films, picnics, fishing, swimming, viewing Texas longhorn, buffalo, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and famous spring wildflowers.

The Nature Trail features a botanical exhibit and wildlife enclosures.  It also leads to the Sauer-Beckmann Farmstead, an authentic Hill Country living-history farm representing life in the early 1900s.  Dressed in period costume, actors representing the original families perform chores in the house and on the farm.  They plow, gather eggs, butcher, cook, and clean.  The Beckmann Family purchased the property in 1900, finally selling it for the park in 1966.  One of the ten Sauer children is the midwife who helped deliver little Lyndon.

Across the Pedernales River is the LBJ Ranch where visitors can tour the Texas White House and the birthplace of Lyndon B. Johnson.  Bus tours of the LBJ Ranch pass Texas White House (restored to its 1960s appearance, Airplane Hangar, Junction School (attended by LBJ at age 4), LBJ birthplace, Johnson Family cemetery (site of annual wreath laying ceremony), cattle range, stone barns and buildings at the Johnson Settlement.

In addition, visitors can enter the Withers & Spauldings, a general store recreated to mimic Johnson's experience from childhood and in later times when he sat down to catch up on the local news.  Johnson City Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center adjoins the store exhibit.  A full-size billboard from the 1964 campaign trail stands at the entrance.

Friends of President Johnson purchased the land across the Pedernales River from his ranch during his presidency and transferred it to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
