Texas homes, farms, and ranches make up the very small community of Stonewall.  About an hour west of Austin TX real estate, Stonewall is close enough for a weekend getaway and far enough for an adventure.  Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, the rural area around Stonewall is home to farms of delicious peaches, destination wineries, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson State Park.  It is 13 miles east of the charming Fredericksburg TX real estate.

Stonewall is the birthplace of President Lyndon B. Johnson.  The LBJ Ranch and Texas Hill Country is an attractive and viable environment predominantly dedicated to ranching.  From a prime position on the banks of the Pedernales River, Texas farms and ranches in Stonewall have flourished in southeastern Gillespie County for a long time.  Stories of ancestors of the 36th President of the United States abound here.

In fact, the mission of the Lyndon Baines Johnson State Park, 1.5 miles east of Stonewall, is to tell this story.  The "circle of life" highlights the agricultural setting of the ranch during the president's youth, the work ethic, cattle operations, and the origin of the president's mindset.  The LBJ Ranch District contains the birth site and his "Texas White House"--available on bus tours.

A regional network of private and public stewardship protects and maintains the natural and cultural heritage of Texas Hill Country.  The partnership includes the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which is partially located nearby in Johnson City.  There is a complete natural resource bibliography, a vascular plant inventory, and a vertebrate inventory.  Precipitation and meteorological data collection is ongoing as is a Remote Automated Weather Station operated for the Texas Forest Service.

LBJ's grandfather, Sam Ealy Johnson Sr., is the namesake of Johnson City. Lyndon moved there to his boyhood home on Elm Street when he was five.  Built in 1901 with furniture from circa 1920, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Additionally, the Visitor Center on Ladybird Lane features a large exhibit gallery tracing the life of the president.

These days, the peaches may be more notable.  The Peach Capital of the World annually hosts the Peach JAMboree, Rodeo, and Dance on the third weekend in June.  Thousands come out to taste the sweetest, juiciest fruit anywhere in Texas.  Grapes are the second largest crop in the area.  Visitors also come to tour the vineyards and award-winning wineries.  Another draw is the Sauer-Beckman History Farm.

Stage station owner and postmaster Israel P. Nunez named the settlement for Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson in 1882.  Early German settlers raised sheep, cattle, and experimented with fruit trees.  Other settlers learned to manufacture lime.
